Creating a Low-Pressure Summer Routine That Works

By the team at Elemenoe | Speech, Language, Behaviour & Learning

Summer can bring a welcome break from the busy school year, but for many families, it also means disrupted routines, unstructured time, and a rise in big emotions.

This shift can be especially challenging for neurodivergent children, who often benefit from clear expectations and consistent daily rhythms. At Elemenoe, we believe summer doesn’t need to be overscheduled to be meaningful. With a little intention, it can be both flexible and supportive.

Why Routines Matter (Especially in the Summer)

Predictable routines help children:

  • Feel secure and regulated

  • Know what to expect next

  • Develop independence and life skills

  • Transition between activities with fewer meltdowns or power struggles

But a summer routine doesn’t need to look like a school timetable. In fact, light, low-pressure routines are often best.

Use “Daily Anchors” to Create Gentle Structure

Think of your day in terms of anchors - those dependable moments that happen most days, like:

  • Wake-up time

  • Breakfast

  • Outdoor play

  • Snack time

  • Quiet time or screen time

  • Dinner

  • Bedtime

You can build a loose rhythm around these points, while leaving lots of space for flexibility, rest, and spontaneous fun. Anchors give your child a reliable framework without feeling rigid.

Why Visual Schedules Work for Neurodivergent Learners

For many neurodivergent children, visual schedules can be helpful indicators of what’s coming next. A visual schedule:

  • Makes time and transitions more concrete

  • Reduces anxiety by showing what’s coming next

  • Increases independence and communication

  • Can be easily adapted based on the day’s plan

Some children may benefit from a full day visual schedule, while others might do well with a simple “first-then” or a “now-next” board. The key is to start small and keep it personalized.

📌 Pro tip: Place the visual schedule somewhere visible, and review it with your child in the morning. Let them help move or check off completed items.
